Cultural Competence in a Growing Organization
Cultural Competence is a key ingredient to the growth and health of any organization. It is widely believed that one can judge the character of a society on how well it treats its most underrepresented populations. The same holds true for companies. Looking at the state of your organizations openness to cultural diversity may reveal signs of character. This is very important when seeking new clientele, partners, or investors. Fostering a climate of diversity and cultural acceptance is a staple of “modern” companies and is essential for growing any business in today’s marketplace. There are three significant ways in which a more culturally competent staff can aid the growth, development, and income or a rising company.
Employing a staff that is rich with cultural diversity will attract a more diverse applicant pool. These applicants will bring with them fresh ideas and culturally unique processes which, when combined with the existing processes will serve to enrich the greater quality of the operation. Being more open and diverse will also attract a wider and more far reaching client pool. The importance of identification cannot be overlooked. Generally, clients are more willing to give their business and support to someone with whom they can identify. A culturally competent and diverse workforce increases the possibilities that your staff will be able to identify with a wide range of clients.
A culturally competent and diverse company will generally create a positive public image for itself. Industry leaders in diversity are often recognized in the community for their efforts and receive recognition as well as respect. This brings invaluable positive (and free) publicity which goes a long way in validating your company to your client base. Receiving attention for diversity will also open the door to highlight the services that serve as the company’s foundation.
From a business or corporate standpoint, competence in cultural diversity is always viewed favorably. For one, it shows potential partners, investors, etc…, that your company is progressive and open to the free flow of ideas. This signifies a company that has the desire to grow and evolve as the market dictates. It also shows that the company is looking to improve, whether it is ideas, staff, or management, as well as cultivate an environment where all backgrounds are appreciated equally. These traits are effective in enhancing the overall appeal of the company while making it more attractive to outside interests.
A company striving to increase cultural competence has nothing to lose and plenty to gain. For these reasons alone, it would be only beneficial to see any company (growing or shrinking) fail to implement a plan to ensure a culturally competent workforce.
